July: The Month of the Camino

Over 25% of all pilgrims each year walk in July and August. The reasons are obvious: work and school holidays. But July brings two major challenges: extreme heat and overcrowding.

Temperatures

Castilian Meseta: 35-42°C at midday. It is not rare to exceed 40°C between Burgos and León
Galicia: 25-30°C, more bearable but with high humidity
Northern coast: 22-28°C, the coolest

Heat Strategy

Start early: leave at 6:00-6:30. Walk as much as possible before 11:00
Mandatory siesta: from 13:00 to 16:00 don't walk. Rest in a bar or albergue
Hydration: drink BEFORE you feel thirsty. Minimum 3 liters/day. Carry mineral salts
Sun protection: wide-brim hat, SPF50 sunscreen, sunglasses. Reapply cream every 2 hours
Light, breathable clothing: no cotton. Quick-dry technical fabrics

The Crowds

In July you will find:

Albergues full before 14:00 (especially from Sarria)
Queues at restaurants at lunchtime
1-2 hour queues at the Pilgrim Office in Santiago

How to Mitigate

Book private albergues or guesthouses in advance
Eat lunch at 12:00 instead of 14:00
Consider starting at less crowded points (not Sarria)
Collect the Compostela first thing in the morning

Is July Worth It?

Yes, if it's your only option for dates. The Camino in July is more social, more festive, and the albergue atmosphere is unmatched. You just need strategy and planning.
